The purpose of a hydrocarbon separator is to separate the remains of oils, mineral greases, fuels and other floating phases that are present in waste waters.
The reason for this is to protect the environment from the aggressive effects of direct discharges and the complications that discharges into the sewerage system causes for municipal water treatment plants. Such discharges are characterised by the presence of vegetable and mineral oils in concentrations ranging from 100 ppm to 500 ppm. The discharge limit values vary according to regulations but should be below 50 ppm.
